A restaurant owner from Luton, who gave police the names of fictitious drivers when caught two speed cameras, was sentenced to 28 days. Mohammed Karim, 41, from Blakeney Drive, admitted two charges perverting the course of justice. Luton Crown Court heard his car was clocked by cameras in the city Stuart Street in October 2008.
Only the police learned of the offense when he lied about the acceleration in Montrose Avenue in November last year. Claudette Elliott, prosecuting, said Karim was driving 8 mph over the speed limit in Stuart Street.When asked to name the driver, he said that Mr. Uddin from Bangladesh, and the police took no further action.
A year later he was stopped on the road to 37 mph in a zone of 30 mph, then called the driver Mr Miah, also from Bangladesh. “This time it does not work,” said Mrs. Elliott, “and, after some prevarication did accept was the driver.” Emma Reed, defending, said Karim was “the backbone” of his restaurant in Watford. Judge Michael Kay QC told him: “Encouraged by the initial success did the same thing again, he tried to brazen situation and continue to lie. “You can come to court with no previous convictions and numerous references that show you as a hardworking, honest and individual charities. “But it’s a crime violates the criminal justice system and the waste and resources in a given case, you can avoid losing their rights.” Karim also fined 100 zł and given three points on your driving license.
